Transparent, fixed-fee pricing
My services
I offer several types of content and technical writing and editing, including articles, white papers, blog posts, explainers, and technical documents.
I write primarily in the areas of sustainability, science, and technology, working with topics such as: advances in clean/nuclear power and industry, climate change and climate science, chemistry and chemical engineering, catalysis, and other sustainable technologies.
If you have a job you think is right for me in a different niche or another field of science, don’t hesitate to reach out—I’m always curious to learn about something new.
My rates
I provide my services at transparent, fully inclusive, fixed rates, which are based on word count and complexity. These fees are what I charge for the vast majority of my work, and will only vary in truly extenuating circumstances of complexity, length, or additional research—there are no hidden costs.
In addition to the content itself, my fixed-fee pricing includes all of the following services:
- Our initial consultation, on whatever platform works best for you
- Detailed understanding of your needs, audience, and approach
- Any questions required to meet your content needs, through email
- Thorough research to ensure I can write with authority
- Inclusion of citations, statistics, quotes, and links
- Reading and including any sources you provide
- Writing clear, engaging, and original content
- Regular email updates according to your needs
- Collaboration through email and Google Docs
- Writing according to your reasonable style guide and formatting requests
- Two free rounds of reasonable revisions to the final piece
- Timely adherence to our agreed-upon deadline
| Content Length | Short 800 words or less | Medium 900-1,200 words | Long 1,300-1,500 words | Very Long 1,600-1,900 words | Extensive Price per 200 words |
| Articles, blog posts, and explainers | $95 | $125 | $165 | $210 | $28 |
| White papers, technical documents | $125 | $165 | $225 | $280 | $36 |
What’s not included?
There are a few additional services not included in my fixed-fee pricing, since they aren’t a part of most deliverables. If you require these services, there will be a small additional charge—but that charge will always be based on the numbers you see here.
- Audio or video meetings beyond my initial consultation: Our first consultation will be free, however you prefer to meet. After that, I charge an hourly rate of $30/hr for participation in audio or video calls. Any other communication—such as through email or Google Docs—remains completely free.
- Reviewing non-text content to write your piece: While I’ll review any written sources you provide (including transcripts) free of charge, I charge an hourly rate of $30/hr for audio and video content that you require I review.
- Revisions beyond the free 2 rounds: If you require revisions beyond the first two free rounds, I charge a fee of 15% of the original price for each additional round.
- Total Rewrites: If your revisions significantly affect more than 50% of the first draft or you want to totally change the scope or tone of the piece, I consider this a rewrite, not a revision. To rewrite the piece, I charge a fee of 50% of the original price.
- Increasing the word count of your content at your request: If you decide you’d like a longer final product after I deliver your article (for example, you’d like me to go into more detail about a certain area), I can add additional words for a fee on a proportional basis (pro rata fee increase).
My editing services
As an editor, I can provide both line editing and copy editing services for technical documents. I’ll edit the piece according to your needs, style, and formatting requirements. I can provide these services both through Google Docs (which keeps a detailed record of changes made) or Microsoft Word’s Track Changes function.
Since the content you need edited may vary widely in length, I don’t used fixed-fee pricing for editing projects. Instead, I charge 2 cents per word for line editing and 2 cents per word for copy editing. If you’d like both line editing and copy editing for the same text, I provide a discount of 3 cents per word total for both services. As with my writing services, I offer two rounds of changes if the finished deliverable doesn’t meet your needs, free of charge.
For deliverables that require more than two rounds of changes, and for high-intensity, time-consuming edits, I charge an hourly rate of $30/hr. Editing services that I consider to be high-intensity and time-consuming include:
- Extensive cutting of a word count: This goes beyond line and copy editing, requiring close reading and understanding of the content to cut word count while leaving the structure and logic of the piece intact without removing critical information.
- Rewrites: Like extensive cutting, rewrites go beyond line and copy editing by requiring a close enough understanding of the content to generate new material. Pieces that contain enough grammatical, content, and wording errors that they cannot be line edited or copy edited “as is” are considered rewrites.
- Citation checking: Verifying the accuracy and formatting of citations is typically very time consuming, and can require searching for missing information.
How can I pay?
Through my invoices, I accept payment via all major credit and debit cards, bank transfers, and checks.
About my invoices
Here’s everything you need to know about my invoices and payment:
- Before I begin work, I require a prepayment of 25% of the expected cost of the final deliverable. This is non-refundable unless I terminate our contract.
- I invoice for the remaining 75% only once the final deliverable is fully finished, approved, and in your hands.
- I charge based on the transparent values agreed to in our contract and on my website.
- I include a detailed, itemized list of every deliverable and charge, so you always know what you’re paying for.
- I send invoices and overdue reminders to the email you provide.
- Invoices may be paid for up to 30 days after receipt of the invoice without being considered late.
- You can pay through all major credit and debit cards, by bank transfer, and by check.
- Under certain circumstances, such as a well-established working relationship between us, I may waive the 25% prepayment requirement.
